Asian Dub Foundation
Hard-hitting, articulate, engaged and evolving (constantly). These are some of the adjectives inspired by this London-based collective born in 1993. Their six albums in 12 years have endeared them to a wide audience going well beyond the Anglo Asian community they were born into. The raw energy of their live concerts are matched by eloquent yet no-holds-barred lyrics that have impressed the likes of David Bowie, Primal Scream and Sinead O’Connor. All three have been part of the collective’s meteoric rise and enduring resilience.

Asian Dub Foundation

Launched as an educational project, Asian Dub Foundation quickly found a real identity of their own. In 1993, the London-based Community Music Project asked Anilruddha Das (a.k.a. Dr Das) to run technology workshops for local Asian youth. A core trio (composed of Dr Das, a 15-year-old rapper called Master D and a social worker named Pandi G) came together and started playing underground parties and anti-racist events. The band got bigger and better by absorbing new members and their respective musical worlds (Bengali, noisy Dub, House, Jungle, Ragga, Techno, etc.). They emerged on the rock scene right after the first election victory of the ultra-right British National Party. Today the music of these anti-racist and anti-fascist activists has gone beyond benefit concerts reaching a wide audience, moving beyond the Asian Undergound scene to have a national and international impact as musical leaders among Anglo-Asians.
